How to do this pose

  1. Take a wide, comfortable stance. Turn the right foot out and let the left toes angle slightly inward.
  2. Bend the right knee in the direction of the right toes while keeping the back foot grounded. Use a shallow bend to begin.
  3. Keep your torso upright and raise the arms to shoulder height if comfortable. Look toward the right hand or keep the head facing forward.
  4. Take a few unforced breaths. Straighten the front leg, lower the arms, and turn the feet to repeat on the other side.

Before you begin

Adapt the stance for knee, hip, or groin injuries. Use support for balance and avoid forcing a painful range.

What you should feel

Work through the thighs and hips, plus light effort in the arms. Knee or groin pain is a reason to reduce the range or leave the pose.

Benefits

Builds leg and shoulder endurance and practises coordination in a broad standing stance.

Common mistakes

Letting the front knee fall inward, leaning the torso toward the front leg, or forcing the thigh parallel to the floor.

Modifications

Shorten the stance and bend less. Rest the hands on the hips or use a stable chair with guidance.
